Collection: Five Elephant 🇩🇪

Founded in Berlin in 2010 by Kris and Sophie Schackman, Five Elephant is both a roaster and an iconic Kreuzberg bakery, famous for its cheesecake. With several coffee shops in Berlin, the house ranks among the most demanding roasters in Europe.

Five Elephant started with cakes. In 2010, Kris Schackman, an American from Massachusetts, and his Austrian partner Sophie opened a small café in Kreuzberg. People came first for the homemade pastries, and above all for a New York, Philadelphia-style cheesecake made from Kris's mother's recipe. Demand grew so fast that the couple decided to pair it with something they cared about just as much: roasting their own coffee.

One of Berlin's Pioneers

The start was far from easy, but Five Elephant became one of Berlin's very first specialty roasters, at a time when the city was only just discovering light, traceable coffee. The roastery settled a few streets from the café, on Glogauer Straße, and the house became a reference for a whole generation of baristas and roasters. Several names on the European scene passed through it, such as Patrik Rolf, who went on to found April in Copenhagen.

In late 2016, Five Elephant opened a second, larger café in Mitte, with the same coffee and pastry pairing. The Kreuzberg café remains the original address, and the one people still visit just for the cheesecake.

Coffee First, No Showing Off

In the cup, Five Elephant keeps the line that made its name: seasonal coffees chosen for their origin, roasted for clarity, and a menu that is easy to read, from espresso to filter. More than fifteen years after the first cake, the house is still true to its original idea: doing simple things well, from cheesecake to cup.
