Coffee Collective was born in 2007 in Copenhagen, in a garage near the airport, around a 12kg Probat roaster. Behind the project were four enthusiasts, three of whom still run the company: Klaus Thomsen, 2006 World Barista Champion, Casper Engel Rasmussen, winner of the 2008 World Cup Tasters Championship, and Peter N. Dupont, a sourcing specialist. The fourth co-founder, Linus Törsäter, has since sold his shares and moved to Sweden.

Jægersborggade, Where It All Began

In 2008, the company opened its first café on Jægersborggade, a Nørrebro street then a long way from its current reputation. The concept was radical at the time: every origin was put in the spotlight, brewing methods were explained to customers, and the bags showed the price paid to the producer. The little shop soon became a must for coffee lovers from all over the world.

Direct Trade, Long Before It Was Trendy

The founders travel to producing countries every year, taste at the farm and buy direct, building relationships that last. The most emblematic partnership is with Kieni, a cooperative washing station in Kenya's Nyeri region that brings together around a thousand smallholders. Coffee Collective has been buying there for many years, and its washed coffees with blackcurrant notes are among the house's flagship coffees.

Growing Without Losing Its Soul

Today, Coffee Collective brings together a roastery, several cafés in Copenhagen, including a counter at the Torvehallerne market halls, an address in Aarhus, a green coffee import business and a bakery. In 2020, it even set up a counter inside a historic copper-roofed telephone kiosk near Nørreport. A certified B Corp since September 2019, with a score of 98.3, the company is still owned and run by its founders, with no franchises, and keeps publishing the prices paid to its producers.
